万斯同是明末清初著名学者、史学大师,他继承黄宗羲之学,以在经学、史学等领域的卓越建树成为清代浙东学派的重要代表,在当时以及后世都产生了极为深远的影响。万斯同一生精力所萃,尽在《明史》,他所提出的史学见解,不仅在《明史》修纂中起着主导作用,而且影响了清初史学发展的面貌。更为重要的是,万斯同还留下了弥足珍贵的《明史》私定稿和修订稿,成为人们深入研究万斯同学术思想、《明史》编纂以及明代历史的丰厚的文化遗产。刚刚过去的2008年是万斯同诞辰370周年,又逢天一阁藏万斯同《明史稿》影印出版。先贤手泽,嘉惠学林。为了向学界集中展示天一阁藏万斯同《明史稿》的价值,深入探讨万斯同主修《明史》对清初史学的影响以及进一步推动相关研究的开展,本刊特别邀请了中国社会科学院历史所、中国人民大学清史所、宁波大学、天一阁博物馆等单位的专家学者就“万斯同与《明史》编纂”发表自己的研究心得,以飨读者。
