Engineers at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, USA, said that using tiny magnetic particles can prevent buildings and bridges from collapsing when they are hit by an earthquake or hurricane. This magnetic particle forms part of a switchable magnetic damping system that can be turned on before the building is damaged. Engineers added a damper to the design of the building to absorb a portion of the externally acting energy, thereby prolonging the life of the building and preventing it from collapsing in the event of a disaster. Bill Spencer and Michael Thain of the University of Notre Dame have developed a magnetic device that can control the degree of swing of a building when it is shaken after an earthquake. Spencer and Thain believe that the damping effect should be increased during the earthquake to release energy, otherwise the energy will damage the structure of the building. The damping device developed by the two researchers was placed on the bottom of the building. The structure of such a damping device is set in a “magnetorheological” fluid consisting of tiny iron particles suspended in oil.
