《元稹年谱》虽然在传主史料的可靠与否、传说的真真假假方面化费了不少精力,但由于没有经过严密的考证,过分信从并不可靠的史料和毫无根据的传说,因而仍然留下了许多遗憾。这些遗憾,有的事关元稹的政治品德,如元稹究竟是主张罢兵的罪人还是反对罢兵的直臣;有的虽然表面看来是细枝末叶的小问题,如《自述》诗的归属,但许多小错误堆积起来,还是要误导读者,无法看清传主的本来面貌,有违于《年谱》著者的初衷。
