S)-2-Acetoxyltridecane, which is the aggregation pheromone of Drosophila Mulleric and the sex pheromone component of the pea midge (Contarinia pisi), was synthesized from ethyl acetoacetate by enzymatic reduction with bakers yeast in the presence of ethyl chloroacetate as a key step. The optical purity of the target product is about 98%e.e.
