中国画独特的观察方法,“面面观”、“步步移”及以小观大的方法是中国画以人(我)为中心的观察方法,它决定了中国画外师造化中最关键是从常理向画理的转变。在师法自然中,要把常理转向画理,就要理解中国画的笔墨、知黑守白及构图取舍中的相关画论。从画理上讲,自然形象为笔墨服务,而不是笔墨为自然形象服务,因此中国画形式高于内容。在师法自然中有三种境界:一:看山是山、看水是水;二:看山非山、看水非水;三:看山亦山、看水亦水;中国画的现代化是形式感样式的现代化。
