鸡蛋花为夹竹桃科落叶小乔木或大灌木,原产于美洲的热带地区。目前,我国在云南、广西,广东、海南、福建南部都有栽培。由于这种树从仲夏到晚秋盛开一种花冠裂片外沿乳白色,近花心处鲜黄色的花朵,观之使人联想到剖开的熟鸡蛋,所以它获得了一个通俗而又令人难以忘怀的名称——鸡蛋花。又因为我国栽培的鸡蛋花多由印度、缅甸等国传入,而且其开花时异常芳香,故民间又称它为“印度素馨”或“缅桅子”。鸡蛋花能自然形成三叉分枝(也有二叉或四叉的),树冠呈半球形;花形端庄隽秀,色彩清新淡
