Titanium alloy castings have long been used as aircraft and engine components, but generally only for parts that require light weight and moderate strength. For parts requiring high strength, the designer relies mainly on precipitation hardened stainless steel to reinforce the titanium alloy in such areas where the strength is critical, which counteracts the advantages of lightweight titanium. Recent research shows that β-titanium alloys have great potential for strength and allow titanium alloys to take full advantage of light weight in applications requiring high strength.
