1939年1月17日,李先念化名李威,率新四军豫鄂独立游击大队及随行干部140余人,从河南省确山县竹沟镇出发南下,执行开辟武汉外围敌后抗日根据地的任务。4月,陈少敏率信阳挺进队及随行干部50余人,也从竹沟镇出发,向鄂中挺进。这两支队伍于6月6日在湖北省安陆县赵家棚会师。随后,豫南、鄂中由共产党领导的抗日武装统一整编为新四军豫鄂独立游击支队。
On January 17, 1939, Li Xixin, a pseudonym, led the work of more than 140 independent Guerrilla Battalions and accompanying cadres of the New Fourth Army, Henan and Hubei Province from the southern town of Zhugou, in Queshan County, Henan Province, to carry out the task of opening up an anti-Japanese base area outside Wuhan’s rear area behind enemy lines. In April, Chen Shaomin rate Xinyang advancing team and accompanying cadres more than 50 people, but also starting from the town of bamboo ditch, advance to Hubei. The two teams met on June 6 in Zhaojiaba, Anlu County, Hubei Province. Subsequently, the unified anti-Japanese armed forces led by the Communist Party of South Henan and Hubei were reorganized into the independent guerrilla detachment of the New Fourth Army of Henan and Hubei.
