由上海冶金设计研究院、上海冶金设备总厂和上钢五厂三家设计、制造、生产单位组成的WPF500高刚度轧机承包小组,86年初开始积极酝酿吸收国外第三代的短应力线、预应力结构的高刚度轧机的优点,改造上钢五厂轧一分厂的500轧机成品机架。采用这种结构并用于500中型轧机的合金钢轧制上,在国内还是首次。1987年底,该轧机如期进行了热调试,获得一次成功,并在试轧三个班后即达到正常班产量。1988年2月正式投入生产,生产的品种规格为φ70~130mm
