In medical practice, “functional” diseases are common. A recent American College of Gastroenterology test, attributable to the gastrointestinal tract and “no clear structure (such as pathology, radiology) abnormalities or infectious or metabolic causes” of the symptoms accounted for the case of members of the Association 41%. No positive diagnosis found that treatment is often ineffective. We are beginning to realize that there is a need for a new understanding of these patients and their diseases. When Clouse et al evaluated patients with functional GI disease, combining physiology and psychology techniques enabled us to establish an effective treatment strategy. According to this understanding, multidisciplinary approaches that include clinical, epidemiological, behavioral, and basic sciences need to be applied in the management of functional gastrointestinal diseases.
