1956年秋天,彭德怀元帅到一个著名风景区开会。当他得知一些漂亮的小洋楼是专给中央领导准备的,哪一级住哪一套哪一层都有严格规定,多数楼一年到头都空着,还得派人维护时,他睡不着了。于是,他半夜起来,围着那些长年空着的小楼,不停地转呀转,看呀看,并自言自语道:有些人硬要把我们往帝王将相的位置上推,还怕人家不知道,在这儿修了当今帝王将相的庵堂庙宇咧!在离开那个风景区时,他语重心长地跟当地一位负责人讲:你们也许是真心实意地尊重我们,但我也要真心实意地告诉你,我们不是帝王将相!你们这样搞,是在群众面前孤立我们嘛。人们看到这些长期关闭的房子,会怎么想?会不骂娘!起码他们会觉得我们这些人太特殊了吧!我们来了住个普通招待所
