故宫博物院藏一八二九年(道光九年)制铜镀金鸟音魔术人钟,构造复杂制作精美,堪称故宫最精彩的一件魔术人钟表。上足发条后,音乐响起,魔术师人偶变换杯子内的彩球、花篮中小鸟,屋顶的小鸟展翅鸣叫……这是瑞士人弗兰克·尼古拉的杰作,弗兰克·尼古拉以制作附带有机械人偶的钟表著称。除此件铜镀金魔术钟外,他于一八四一年曾制作另一件外观相似、而内容为女钢琴家人偶弹奏乐曲的钟表,后者现藏瑞士塞温自动音乐装置博物馆。故宫所藏此件铜镀金魔术人钟现在能够如近两百年前一样自如表演,还得益于故宫科技部钟表组的悉心修复,现借修复时对其进行的调查、拆解与复原,让读者一览此件「玩具」轻易不得见的种种细节。
