明代,几乎每代皇帝都选进一批至数批宫女。嘉靖年间,选进的宫女尤多。关于明代宫女,清帝玄烨曾在康熙四十八年十一月十二日对大学士们讲过这样一段话:“明季事迹,卿等所知往往皆纸上陈言。万历以后所用内监,曾有在御前服役者,故朕知之独详。”又说:“明季宫女至九千人,内监十万人,饭食不能遍及,日有饿死者。今则宫中不过四、五百人而已。”
