预计到2000年，将有20亿左右的智能卡在各种领域中使用。每张卡都含有一块微型芯片，并带有触点。这种卡被广泛用于计费电话，用作信用卡、银行情者卡、收费电视卡以及存有个人健康和驾驶信息的身份卡。目前欧洲占据整个智能卡使用量的90％，但亚洲会紧随欧洲迅猛增长。欧洲主要的芯片制造商都有大规模投入了智能卡芯片的生产，而其它的专业公司再将这些芯片加工成卡片，并研究开发与之配套的专用材料和设备
It is estimated that by 2000, there will be about 2 billion smart cards used in various fields. Each card contains a microchip with contacts. Such cards are widely used for billing phones, as credit cards, bank lover cards, pay television cards, and identification cards that contain personal health and driving information. At present, Europe accounts for 90% of the entire smart card usage, but Asia will follow Europe’s rapid growth. Major European chip makers have large-scale investment in the production of smart card chips, and other specialized companies then process these chips into cards and research and develop special materials and equipment for them.
