In this paper, mitochondrial hydroperoxide-inactivating enzyme activity in liver and kidney of rats exposed to Hgcl2 was studied, and blood enzyme activity in patients with occupational mercury poisoning was tested. The results showed that compared with the control group, the mitochondrial GSH-px activity and GSH-Px / GR ratio were decreased (P <0.05), while the corresponding enzymatic activities of CAT, GR and liver mitochondria were not affected influences. In addition, the activity of GSH-Px in the blood of patients with mercury poisoning was significantly lower than that of the normal control group (P <0.01), and CAT activity was not significantly changed, which was in good agreement with the animal experiments. The results suggest that mercury-induced nephrotoxicity may be related to GSH-Px inhibition, presumably hydroperoxide removal disorders may be the role of mercury to promote toxic effects.
