In analyzing stresses and deformations, it is common practice to simplify an ordinary closed-frame mill to a simple statically indeterminate rigid frame or to reduce its symmetrical half to a cantilever beam that is subjected only to vertical and static bending moments. The horizontal restraint of the rack fixing bolts on the rack by the rack foot is neglected, and it is generally assumed that the position of the rack foot has no effect on the rack stress and deformation. Finite element analysis of the rack stress results show that this assumption is not realistic for long columns and four-high rolling mills.
