In late August 1900, Japan took the opportunity of the soaring box-office movement of the Boxer Rebellion in northern China to dispatch troops to Xiamen in an attempt to expand its interest in Fujian and set up a solid bridgehead for the southward invasion. After the Chinese protests and intense pressure, Japan was forced to stop its military operations and withdraw its troops from Xiamen. This incident is called “Xiamen incident.” This article, based on the historical materials as much as possible, intends to give a brief account of the incident in light of personal opinions so as to seek advice from experts.
