会泽红皮蚕豆,是该县那姑公社新光大队的栽培良种,现已普及到那姑、金钟公社的几十个生产队,种植面积近万亩。那姑公社新光大队,海拔1860公尺左右,气候温和,年平均气温约15.0—15.5℃,土壤多属冲积性红壤水稻土和沙质壤土。现种的蚕豆品种主要是红皮蚕豆和白皮蚕豆,两品种均属中熟中棵中粒种。据访问,红皮蚕豆原产嵩明县某地。还是在解放前,新光当地的农民外出,路经嵩明县某地,意外地发现红皮蚕豆,好奇地带回少许在自家的田里种植,表现生长良好,
