图案石在其形式的方面是以其“形”表现自身的价值存在。根据象形石的划分(见《收藏》1994年第3期《象形石的品位及鉴赏》和《花木盆景》1996年第4期《“象形石”琐谈》),图案石只是其“形”的一种类型——因其“形”具某种图案而称之为图案石。这是它的一种外在的表现,亦即形式方面的价值存在。或者,它的存在价值仅此而已,或者,还可由外入里、由形入内,让我们领略到不仅是图案石的形式美,还可品尝到图案石的意味,甚至是悠长的意味。玩石,历来有玩在外和玩在内的分别,所谓玩在外者重“形”、玩在内者重“意”。玩石名家,都不会停留于外。比如米芾,他的瘦皱透漏四字标准,看似在外,其实是力透纸背的。当前玩图案石确有重外轻内,甚至是忽视图案石之意的倾向。也许这是凡事之初的必然。“意”确是要比“形”更难于把握的认识对象,也是一个深刻的哲学概念,有其不可解读性。好在石玩总是一件件可以触摸的实体,也就能使我们从“形”的此岸摸着石头过河到“意”的彼岸去看一看。以下试举三例,作为品图案石之意的砖头(注:举例皆见1994年11月上海古籍出版社《中华奇石》刊照)
