In the Arctic, 22.2% of the world’s total oil and natural gas resources to be discovered are in the Arctic. Total oil and gas resources amount to 412.1 billion barrels of oil equivalent, of which about 90 billion barrels of oil are to be discovered, 47.26 trillion cubic meters of natural gas and 84% of the remaining oil and gas resources to be discovered on the sea. The Arctic oil and gas resources survey completed by the United States Geological Survey in 2008 shows the prospect of Arctic oil and gas resources. However, the Arctic’s poor mining conditions, territorial disputes and environmental pressures have also hindered Arctic oil development.
