壹建文元年(公元1399年),久有夺位之心的燕王朱棣决定挥师南下,历时三年多从当时封地北平(今北京市)打到南京,从侄儿朱允炆手中夺取政权。临行前,他问他深为倚赖的“国师”——大和尚姚广孝有何嘱咐。姚广孝说:“殿下到了南京,一定会顺利取得皇位,忠实于建文帝的大臣们也会有许多人不肯同你合作,这些大臣中有一个叫方孝儒的人,他是建文帝的老师,这个人你万万杀不得。”朱棣问他为何杀不得,姚广孝回答:
