清代文人杨昌濬曾写过一首诗:“大将筹边未肯还,湖湘子弟满天山,新栽杨柳三千里,引得春风度玉关。”诗中的栽柳人指的就是清代的左宗棠。左宗棠一生酷爱柳树,时人亲切地称他为“柳树将军”、“柳痴”。出生于柳树遮道的湖南湘阴乡下的左宗棠,对柳树情有独钟,从小就受到传统柳文化的熏陶,对植柳、折柳、戴柳等风俗耳闻目濡。他特别敬佩与熟谙西汉名将周亚夫驻军细柳(今陕西咸阳西南)时,带领将士在军营周围广植柳树的故事,心想有朝一日,能在以武报国同时也在边关建一个“柳营”。可是,
