Recent progress in the research techniques applied to the study of vegetative incompatibility in fungi, and the genetic basis and applications of the phenomenon, have been summarized. The role of heterokaryon incompatibility (het) loci in controlling vegetative incompatibility has been described, and the accuracy of using vegetative incompatibility to discriminate between fungal strains discussed.
