王选是中国IT业的“大腕”,被称为“汉字激光照排系统之父”。中国现在绝大多数(据说是99％)的报刊印刷厂都用他研制的方正激光照排系统。我小时候经常跑印刷厂,看到排版工人走来走去,瞪大眼睛寻找一个又一个铅字,再躬腰撅背地拼成一个个版面,心里特别佩服,因为一本本书,就是这样从铅字变出来的。大概是七八年前,我到《人民日报》海外版有事,偶然到了他们的排版部门,忽然发现已经不见了捧着铅字盒的工人,只见一台台电脑前,编辑人员轻轻敲打着键盘,将稿子输出来,再交给排版的人剪剪裁裁,就变成了整个版面的大样。此时我想起以前的排版工人,那种辛苦,那种充满铅味的污染空间,如今一去不复返了。而实现这一转变的功臣,就是王选教授。当时我就想,高等院校里的科研英才多得成堆,脑子比王选好使的恐怕也不是一个两个,可为什么偏偏是他发明了这么值得赞美的东西?
Wang Xuan is China’s IT industry’s “biggest names”, known as “the father of Chinese laser printing system.” The vast majority of China’s (now 99%) press printing houses use the Founder laser-based system they developed. When I was a kid, I often ran a printing house to see the typeset workers walking around and looking up one after another in a typeface, bowing back and forth in a single page, especially in my heart, for a book is like this. At this point I am reminded of the former typesetter, the kind of hard, that kind of pollution of space filled with lead, now gone. The hero of this change is Professor Wang Xuan. At that time, I thought that there are not many pillars of scientific research in institutions of higher learning, but not one or two in mind than the one chosen by the king. But why did he invent something so commendable?
