熟悉上海掌故的人,大概都知道城隍庙是中国的城隍,外国的资本。城隍庙是外国人拿出钱来建筑,而让中国人去烧香敬佛。到那里去的人,每天总是很多很多,目的也各自不同。有的带了子女,买了香烛,到菩萨面前求财祈福。有的却因为那里是一个百货杂陈、价钱特别公道的地方,去买便宜货。还有的,可说是闲得无聊,跑去散散心,喝喝茶,抽抽烟,吃吃瓜子。至于外国人,当然也耍去,特别是初到中国来
