The Boeing McDonnell Aircraft and Missile Systems Division has asked Raytheon Systems to develop an advanced ATELIR system for installation on the Boeing Navy’s F / A-18 Hornet and Super Hornet aircraft. A $ 21 million one-way contract calls for the delivery of engineering manufacturing prototypes for validation and flight testing in mid-1999. The contract also included the option of short-term production of 2 years (24 in the first year and 33 in the second year) in order to achieve initial operational capability by May 2002. The plan calls for 574 production units to be installed on the F / A-18E / F fighter as an infra-red base system, as well as the earlier F / A-18 models. The ATFLIR pod uses the third generation medium wave infrared target and navigation system. The target forward-looking infrared uses Raytheon’s gaze-focal-plane technology developed for the Marine Corps MV-22 Osprey helicopter to navigate forward-looking infrared and other critical
