In order to determine whether there is increased cardiovascular sympathetic nervous system regulation and decreased parasympathetic nervous system regulation with increasing age, the authors measured plasma norepinephrine concentrations and quantitatively measured respiratory sinus arrhythmias (R -R changes in spacing), and the afferent iris afferent sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system and plasma adrenaline levels were examined.
