《沈氏研林》在历代砚谱中有着极为重要的地位,缘于这本砚谱中收有历代名砚,更因为其中一百二十余方砚铭、该诗是吴昌硕书写的,为文房爱好者、藏砚家所珍重。是谱是在沈石友[1]殁后六年,其子沈若怀将其父沈石友藏砚编拓而成。根据目录,共收沈石友藏砚一百五十八方。沈石友以藏砚著称江南,晚年一直致力于收藏历代名砚,并根据需要刻上砚铭。其时,吴昌硕弟子赵古泥在沈家以刻碑为生,铭刻皆委赵古泥任其事。沈石友生前一直想将所藏砚台编辑成谱,以传后世。日本园田湖城旧藏有一册《石友砚谱》,是沈石友
