This paper describes the process of heterogeneous polymerization, including suspension, emulsion, dispersion and precipitation polymerization. The discussion focused on the initial state of the polymerization mixture, the particle formation mechanism, the shape and size of the polymer particles generated in the different heterogeneous polymerization systems. The dependence of particle size and morphology on the preparation parameters such as emulsifier, stabilizer, reactor design and stirring speed was discussed. Also briefly mentioned are several special topics including emulsion-free (soap-free) emulsion polymerization, seed polymerization, and the formation of core-shell particles.
