谭平,祖籍山东烟台,1960年出生于河北省承德市。1980年考入中央美术学院版画系,1984年毕业并留校任教;1989年至1994年获德国文化艺术交流奖学金（DAAD）,留学柏林艺术大学自由绘画系,获硕士学位和Meisterschule学位。1994年至2002年参与筹建中央美术学院设计系,担任设计系主任,2002年出任设计学院院长一职,2003年至2014年间担任中央美术学院副院长。现为中国艺术研究院副院长。
