Developers of robotic devices sometimes need to have a rotating element that rotates between tens of degrees between two positions. This type of motion control is especially useful when opening a door, turning a valve, or controlling a small robot's arms and legs. Two possible solutions for this type of position control are the use of solenoids and motors mounted on the gear train. Solenoids need to be carefully machined to convert linear motion into rotational motion and to always be the same between the two positions
