衡阳县赤石,西距衡阳市40公里。在赤石东南四公里的三湖町有汉代钟武县故城址。据《衡阳县志》载:“钟武故城在城西(今衡阳市)八十里,汉置县,属零陵郡。”考故钟武县沿革,西汉置县,属零陵郡。东汉改置重安国。三国时改置重安县,移治衡阳郡。 1986年12月和1988年11月,赤石乡的东风村、赤石村村民在大鸡坪、小鸡坪、鹅公岭取土制砖,揭露了一些古代墓葬。衡阳市博物馆闻讯派员清理发掘,发掘了一批古墓葬。其中有五座新莽墓。简报如下。
