This article confirms the significant improvement in the degree of global current account imbalances since the outbreak of the financial crisis. Specifically, the U.S. current account deficit as a share of GDP has fallen by half from 6% to 3%; China’s current account surplus has also dropped significantly. The reduction in imbalances between these two countries and the more general reduction in global imbalances then examine whether it is a temporary shift or a long-term adjustment simply because the imbalance was interrupted by the financial crisis.
