International Symposium on Experimental Embryology of DNA Methylation, Imprinting and Cancer, Held by the American Association for Cancer Research, December 12-16, 1997, El Conquistadoa Resort and Country Club, Las Croabas, Puerto Rico, USA . Nearly 100 scholars from all over the world attended the conference. Currently, methylation of cystosine residues in eukaryotic DNA has been shown to play a key role in mammalian development, involving both whole-genome and X-chromosome inactivation. There is growing evidence that changes in DNA methylation are the most commonly observed changes in human cancer cells. It is directly involved in the inactivation of CpG region mutations in tumor suppressor genes and correlates with genetic alterations in gene expression during carcinogenesis. There is also evidence that altered methylation parameters may directly affect chromosomes
