The Opium War that erupted in 1840 was a war of aggression by capitalist Britain that opened the door to China by force. After the defeat of China, the Qing government was forced to sign the first unequal treaty in modern China, the Sino-British Treaty of Nanking. From then on, China began to lose its independent political and economic status and became a semi-colonial and semi-feudal society. The Opium War had a huge impact on China and had a turning-point effect on China’s social development. The main destructive side, but also a promotional side. This article aims to clarify that the Opium War was the beginning of modern history in China and its dual impact on China.
