一九七九年作者选择来自不同地区和具有不同性状的粳稻品种60个,其中包括国内及我省新育成不育系的同型保持系及恢复系17个,同时于合肥、安庆两地作晚稻种植,然后根据考种和测产结果,进行统计分析和数据运算,分别计算出60个品种可能配置的1770个组合间与产量有关的数量性状的遗传距离,并依据遗传距离及品种的主成分筛选,提出54个初步当选组合,(其中主要是入选的品种间遗传距离较大的两亲配组,也包括了一些遗传距离大,但未能入选的恢保品种间配组),作为预测的优良组合(详见湖南农业科技1981
