作为中国第一部专事叙写人间世情(即现实生活)的长篇小说,其空间叙事带给我们许多关于作者、时代和创作诸关系信息。从考查小说叙事空间与作者关系是否是原生空间来看,作者应不可能是某一文人而应该是集体;从考查小说叙事空间与时代伦理要求关系来看,其叙事空间并非铁板一块,而是各有分工,既有社会伦理性的,也有私人自由性的;从考查叙事空间的变易与叙事进程的关系来看,一般性的空间分工在现实中依然错综复杂,人物性格的多样性和故事的复杂性正是在这种错综复杂的空间中得到更为真实的表现,这不是作者创作的任性所致,而是现实本来如此。
