沃森(1958)发现,作物光合效率可用净同化率来测定,净同化率的高低则取决于叶面积指数的大小,但是叶面积指数的增加如超过最适宜的范围,净同化率就会降低。阿什利等人(1965)指出,叶面积指数与籽棉产量有密切关系。棉株籽棉产量的高低可由结实系数来判断(克劳瑟,1944)。关于这一点,布哈特(1970)曾研究指出,有些品种每公顷籽棉产量相似,而干物质产量却有很大区别,所以它们的结实系数不同。他发现,棉花的短果枝特性是与它的生产能力和高结实系数相联系的。
