白寿彝先生为我国已故著名史学家。白先生毕生从事历史学的教学与研究工作,在中国通史、中国史学史、中国民族史等史学研究领域都取得了重大成就;白先生还是本刊的创办人,长期以来为刊物的发展倾注了大量的心血。值此白先生诞辰100周年之际,本刊特辟纪念专栏,刊载了施丁研究员、瞿林东教授、吴怀祺教授和陈其泰教授的四篇文章。施丁的文章谈了当年白先生引导其读《史记》时,提出要读进去、学其长、论其世、成一家之言的要求和希望;瞿林东的文章认为通识和器局是白先生的学术特点和学术宗旨,这在他关于马克思主义唯物史观与中国通史撰述、民族观与民族史研究、史学理论与史学史撰述中都有突出的反映;吴怀祺的文章从“为了推动历史的前进”、“要站在世界的前列,不能一般化”和“认真读书与学风培育”三个方面具体论述了白先生的史学发展观;陈其泰的文章认为白先生从历史编纂学在史学中的重要地位、主要研究内容、研究方法等方面为学科建设提出了宏观构思,而其总主编的多卷本《中国通史》所创立的“新综合体”则是其长期理论探索在史学实践中的成功运用。这四篇文章有助于我们深入了解白先生的学术思想与治史精神。
