Bell Systems announced that it has already sold two larger commercial fiber optic communications systems. The 168-mile system, manufactured by Western Electric, runs between Sacramento, California, and San Jose and is the second longest-running system currently in operation. The $ 38 million line is the first of a total of $ 630 million in communications and will eventually reach San Diego, California. The other system, based in Louisiana, is the first laser-based system to come into operation recently.
