Skin conductance is related to the concentration of various ions in the skin surface and internal fluids and can therefore be used as a noninvasive method of detecting sweat gland function after irradiation. The authors describe a system for recording skin conductance to measure changes in sweat gland function after radiotherapy. Two monitors were used for the examination, with simultaneous readings of the bilateral symmetry of the chest wall, with the uninsulated side as a control. Each monitor has five metal electrodes each separated by 20 mm under a silicone rubber sheet, along with measurements of four adjacent zones on one side.
