Numerous studies have shown that exposure to high concentrations of ozone can lead to the accumulation of collagen in mammalian lung tissue. Chronic toxicity tests showed that exposure of rats to 0.4-1.3 ppm of ozone for weeks to six months increased collagen synthesis and protein synthesis rates in the lung tissue. However, there is little empirical evidence on the toxic effects of ozone concentrations present in urban settings. The author chooses to approach the polluted urban environment
