2000年,唐北沙作为骨干参与夏家辉院士领航的《神经性耳聋的致病基因定位和克隆》研究,在我国首次对致病基因成功克隆,从而一举打破了西方国家认为中国短期内不能实现对致病基因克隆的神话,获得国家自然科学奖二等奖(一等奖空缺)。从这一年开始,喜讯接踵而至:“神经系统的致病基因定位和克隆”获国家863课题支持,“神经系统遗传疾病的临床诊断原则和平台的建立”被列为国家十五攻关项目,“神经系统退行性疾病研究”获国家最高级别的973课题评审委员会通过,“帕金森病的发病机制探讨”获国家自然科学基金;从2002年起,唐北沙领导的科研攻关小组每年取得了国家三个国家自然科学基金……正是通过这一项又一项研究,确立了湘雅人在中国医学界的崇高地位;也正是诸如神经系统退行性疾病研究“一类科学难题的突破,使湘雅的神经内科学水平走到了世界的前沿。
