Hepatitis B virus (HBV) has not yet been able to proliferate in tissue culture systems and has no susceptible animals other than chimpanzees. Recently a model for studying HBsAg has been established, namely a human hepatoma cell line producing HBsAg; PLC / PRF / 5 and Hep 3B. HBsAg produced by PLC / PRF / 5 cell line is similar in morphology, size and polypeptide composition to the serum of hepatitis B patients. The Hep 3B hepatoma cell line still retains the ability to synthesize both albumin and alpha-fetoprotein with the highest HBsAg production in non-dividing cells at the end of the growth cycle.
