重晶石为含钡硫酸盐矿物,是制取钡和钡化合物的最重要的工业矿物原料。由于重晶石比重大、硬度大、化学性质稳定、不溶于水和酸,因此早在20世纪20年代就被用作石油和天然气钻井泥浆的加重剂,目前美国在这方面的重晶石用量占重晶石消费量的90%左右。
