RAMICS
According to “Jane’s International Navy,” October 2002, the U.S. Navy awarded Northrop Grumman a $ 36.9 million three-year contract to develop the RAMICS Rapid Airborne Minesweeping System. This marks a step forward in the immature capacity of the U.S. Navy to build its own de-mining capability. The RAMICS system will provide the U.S. Navy with quick access to theater of operations to destroy anchors and access surface water mines. The system revolves around a fixed 30mm MK4 Gatling gun mounted on an MH-60S helicopter to launch a special tail-stabilized armor-piercing projectile. The tail flaps around the bombs in the air to ensure that water enters at an oblique angle. A dart-like bullet forms a bubble at the water inlet, drastically reducing drag, and its flight trajectory is much more straightforward than a conventional ballistic trajectory. RAMICS
