The authors conducted a series of Freon-113 fluid safety valve tests. The liquid is stored in a reservoir containing the piston, which is then rapidly displaced through the relief valve into a large volume tank by moving the piston. Tests show that: the safety valve flow characteristics and holes similar. The flow of liquid is proportional to the square root of the pressure differential at the inlet and outlet of the relief valve and both the cold and hot Freon data fall on the same straight line. However, the flow section of the spool is variable and its size depends on the pressure at the inlet and outlet of the safety valve and on the flow through it.
