USDA: Estimated Reduction of US Cotton Production in 2013 According to the USDA’s first forecast for 2013 production, U.S. cotton production is forecast at 14 million bales, a 19% decrease from the 2012 final production assessment. Based on the intentional planting report, the area planted for cotton in 2013 is estimated at 10 million acres, also a 19% decrease from 2012, the lowest level in four years. The reason for the reduced planted area is that the price of competing crops is relatively higher than that of cotton.
