经国务院批准,四川省调整蓬溪县行政区划,设立大英县。由大英卓筒井命名的大英县于1997年12月28日在蓬莱镇正式成立,四川又多一个县。有趣的是,大英县名与卓筒井有关。举世著称的大英卓筒井原位于四川省蓬溪县蓬莱镇大英乡(现大英乡改为卓筒井镇)。大英卓筒井始创于北宋庆历年间(公元1041-1048年),卓筒井是一种用直立粗大的竹筒,从地下取卤水的盐井,井深130米左右,解放初期,大英乡拥有盐灶108家,盐井1171眼,年产盐达4000吨,行销于乐至、安岳、简阳、金堂、大足等地。现存宋代钻成的卓筒井41眼,盐灶9家,成了该镇起龙头作用的乡镇企业。大英卓筒井系四川省重点文物
