从理论的递进发展的角度，评介了心灵哲学中心理语词的语义学问题，介绍了人们用以描述心理状态的常识语词从何处获得意义的三种观点，即“标准观点”、“哲学行为主义的操作定义”和“理论网络论”。经过分析，文章倾向于如下结论：心理语词的主要的、甚至唯一的意义来源是这些语词出现于其中的常识性理论网络，只有学会了使用包含这些心理语词的预言和解释规则之后，才有可能理解那些常见的心理语词的意义。
